A brief history of the garter toss.......

A brief history of the garter toss ...

With all the talk of garter tossing, I found this little piece of info amusing ...

Tossing the wedding garter is an old time held tradition. It is said that in the days gone past, the bride and groom had to show proof of their wedding consummation. In order for it to be proven, it was common tradition to have people like family and friends come into the room with the couple. The "witnesses" would obtain the garter as "proof" of the consummation. Also having any article of the under garments was considered to be good luck so sometimes things would get out of hand in the newly wed's bedroom as crazed onlookers snatched at clothing to get for good luck. This was not appreciated much by the bride nor many grooms, hence the groom started tossing the garter out so that no one would need to obtain it themselves. Because of modesty, this tradition has been modified and moved from the bedroom to the reception. Now today we have the traditional garter toss, which is meant to bring good luck to the man who catches it. He is said to be the next one to marry. In some cultures the men stand and wait for the garter to be tossed. Other cultures they actually compete for it. The men may compete for the garter in a foot race or by horse (this is a medieval practice). At least it is better than having the men chase the bride and put her upside down to get the garter off... This is what used to happen! In yet other places, they even auction the garter off. As strange as these twists on the wedding garter tradition may sound, it's all just a tradition. Take it or leave it... or should I say "Take it or Toss it! "

Bubbly Bride: The Final Wedding Dress Fitting

Bubbly Bride: The Final Wedding Dress Fitting

You have already been into the boutique 2-3 times to measure and shorten and take in the dress so it fits you perfectly for this final moment! You spent the morning pampering yourself by having your hair designed and your makeup artistically applied. You are ready now for your final fitting.

Your bridesmaids, mother, extended family and flower girls are surrounding you, helping you get into your gown, or maybe it is just your maid of honor sharing this special moment. A big question for brides is do you want your photographer capturing this moment, or do you want to spend the first moment in your dress in peace and quiet. I think both options make sense and vary based on your personality!

If you tend to be more conservative and aren't comfortable changing into your dress with your photographer in the room, but you still want these moments captured—take the time to change mostly into your dress and then invite your photographer back in. Have them take pictures of your maid of honor zipping or tying your dress up and putting on your finishing touches. Sometimes photographers will come in pairs, one woman and one man. Having a woman in the room with you might make you feel more comfortable and in turn get exciting real-life shots.

If you aren't shy, and you know you want pictures of every stage of the day, invite your photographer in and let them get creative with the angles and shots...you will not be sorry! There is so much excitement when you are putting your dress on for the final time and your hair and make up is done. The last year of planning all of a sudden comes together and it is finally 'real'. You know you are truly getting married today!

Whether you have pictures to remember this moment or not, I guarantee it will forever be engraved in your memory. I hope every bride is able to look at themselves after they put their wedding dress on and know that all of the hard work & planning has finally paid off—and you are able to walk up to your future husband with the utmost confidence and excitement!

Winter 2009 Bridal Hair Accessory Trends

Winter 2009 Bridal Hair Accessory Trends

It's 90 degrees outside right now, but bridal designers are thinking ahead to Fall and Winter 2009 with an eye towards the newest designs and the hottest trends. Bridal magazines rarely focus on bridal accessories – for them, it's all about the dress. Hair accessory aficionados know how to track the trends – look towards the hair styles. Accessories tend to follow the current hair styles. There are two styles right now leading the pack for this fall and winter – vintage looks that borrow from the 1920's and 1940's, and hairbands.

Want Honest Wedding Advice? Be Honest

Want Honest Wedding Advice? Be Honest

I got my haircut this weekend (By the way, what they say about bangs making you look younger is 100% true, 3 hours later I was carded in a restaurant).

Anyway, my hairstylist started complaining about a wedding she’s in, which led to me telling her about my job, and then she said that she’s engaged, too! She asked me a few questions, then she said “I’ve heard you shouldn’t tell vendors that things are for a wedding, because they’ll charge you more. Is that true?”

This is definitely something you read in books about weddings on a budget, but I’ve never really understood it. If you have a wedding vendor to whom you have to lie in order to get a good price, how reliable and trustworthy is that vendor? I’m also curious about the intelligence of the DJ who can’t figure out that the party you’re describing is a wedding......
